Freedom, Equality, and the Law (Syllabus)
This upper division course is an examination of freedom and equality under the U.S. Constitution, focusing on the Due Process Clause and Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. This course covers theories of constitutional interpretation; the natures of freedom and equality as values; and landmark Supreme Court cases concerning discrimination on the basis of race, sex, undocumented status, wealth, sexual orientation, and gender identity, and cases regarding contraceptives, abortion, interracial marriage, and same-sex marriage.
Ethics and Society: Ethics of Technology (Syllabus)
This lower division course is an introduction to ethics through the lens of ethics of technology. The course begins with metaethics, focusing moral realism vs. anti-realism. The course then shifts to surveying ethical and social issues concerning technology. Topics include how technology influences our values, whether we should regulate social media companies, the value of data privacy, ethical issues concerning algorithmic use and algorithmic bias, and the moral status of artificial intelligence.
Future Courses
Political Legitimacy and Following the Law (email me for syllabus)
This is an upper division course about what reason, if any, we have to follow the law. This course begins with theories from the history of philosophy about political legitimacy and then moves to contemporary, non-ideal theories. We then examine when, if ever, we are morally permitted or morally obligated not to follow the law.Â
Life and Death (email me for syllabus)
This is an upper division bioethics course concerning the beginning and ending of life. We start with a suvery of ethical questions about anti-natalism, abortion, and gamete donation. We then move to questions about the end of life. Topics include whether assisted suicide is permissible, whether and why death is bad, and the meaning of life.
