Freedom, Equality, and the Law (click here for syllabus)
This upper division course is an examination of freedom and equality under the U.S. Constitution, focusing on the Due Process Clause and Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. This course covers theories of constitutional interpretation; the natures of freedom and equality as values; and landmark Supreme Court cases concerning discrimination on the basis of race, sex, undocumented status, wealth, sexual orientation, and gender identity, and cases regarding contraceptives, abortion, interracial marriage, same-sex marriage, and trans rights.
Introduction to Ethics of Technology (click here for syllabus)
This lower division course is an introduction to the ethics of technology. The course begins with metaethics, focusing moral realism vs. anti-realism. The course then shifts to surveying ethical and social issues concerning technology. Topics include how technology influences our values, whether we should regulate social media companies, the value of data privacy, ethical issues concerning algorithmic use and algorithmic bias, and the moral status of artificial intelligence.
Technology and Human Values
This upper division course is a survey of topics in value theory related to technology. Topics include ethical questions about how technology influences our values, political questions about whether and how we should regulate big tech companies, epistemological questions about deepfakes, and aesthetic questions about AI-generated content.
